Description
There is a particular quality to summer light on the Mediterranean.
It comes off the water differently than anywhere else — sharper, warmer, and carrying with it the smell of citrus groves on the hillsides above the harbours, salt air rising from ancient stone terrazzo, teak decks warming in the morning sun, brass fittings catching the light and throwing it back in ways that make everything look like it belongs in a painting.
This is the light Sunshine & Citrus was built from.
Not the idea of the Mediterranean. The actual thing — the harbours this family has anchored in, the terrazzo this captain has walked, the teak decks she has stood on watching the sun come up over the Ligurian Sea while the rest of the anchorage slept. This bar smells like those mornings. It looks like those mornings. And it performs like something made by people who understand that in certain latitudes, at certain hours, everything is exactly as good as it should be.
Sunshine & Citrus closes the bright end of our citrus collection alongside Lemon Drop — our French patisserie golden hour bar — and Orange Crush — our tide line bar with its tropical infinity pool energy. Where Lemon Drop is precise elegance and Orange Crush is playful depth, Sunshine & Citrus is the open Mediterranean on a perfect summer morning. No complications. Just light.
What's in it — and what it actually does
5x concentrated sweet orange essential oil is the sunshine of this bar — five times the standard concentration so the scent stays bright, vivid, and genuinely orange from the first lather to the very last sliver. Standard citrus essential oils are volatile and fade quickly in natural soap. Not this one. Combined with kaolin clay as a scent anchor in the lighter layer, this bar stays exactly as bright as the morning it was made. Every wash. Every time.
Bergamot essential oil — cold-pressed from the rind of a citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in Calabria on the southern coast of Italy — is the sophistication that elevates this bar beyond a simple orange soap into something genuinely Mediterranean. Bergamot is the note that makes Earl Grey tea distinctive, that perfumers seek for its extraordinary ability to lift and refine whatever surrounds it. Here it takes sweet orange and makes it elegant — bright and citrusy but with a floral depth and complexity that makes Sunshine & Citrus smell like somewhere worth sailing to. On skin it is clarifying, mood-elevating, and genuinely brightening — the essential oil equivalent of that Mediterranean light hitting your face on a perfect morning.
Together the two oils create something that smells simultaneously of the fruit and the place it comes from — the orange groves on the hillsides above Portofino, the citrus markets of the Amalfi Coast, the particular warmth of southern European summer carried on a sea breeze.
The split batter is where this bar becomes art.
Half the batter receives French pink clay and organic turmeric powder — the warm, golden, sun-kissed layer the color of orange flesh in full summer light. French pink clay tones and detoxifies with extraordinary gentleness while turmeric contributes its centuries-documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This layer does the skincare work — brightening, calming, and nourishing simultaneously.
The other half receives kaolin clay — the purest and most gentle of all clays, creating the pale layer the color of orange pith. Kaolin anchors the scent, ensuring the bergamot and orange stay present and vivid throughout the bar's entire life, while its mild mineral content refines and softens the skin with every wash.
The two layers swirl together in every bar — warm golden turmeric against pale kaolin, the colors of a perfectly peeled orange cross-section on a teak deck in the morning sun. Every bar comes out slightly different because real ingredients in real hands never produce exactly the same result twice. That's not inconsistency. That's handmade.
Organic coconut milk — a 50/50 solution — transforms the lather into something silky, rich, and deeply hydrating. The Mediterranean sun asks a lot of skin. This bar gives it back.
Why our tallow is different — and why it matters
Not all tallow is equal. Certified grass-fed means that animal spent a minimum of 95% of its life on open pasture — sun, grass, and open land the way nature intended. Only 5% grain. Ever. That standard produces tallow with a nutrient profile that grain-fed, shed-raised, bleached commercial tallow simply cannot match — rich in conjugated linoleic acid, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and the kind of bioavailable fats your skin recognizes as its own.
We source it low-heat rendered — meaning every nutrient is preserved from pasture to bar. We verified that process before we chose our supplier and we'd make a different choice if it changed.
It costs us twice what standard tallow costs. Even certified organic tallow can come from grain-fed, shed-raised animals. Certified grass-fed covers how that animal actually lived.
We'll take our chances with the sun and grass. Want to know why tallow? [Read more →]
Built by a family that knows these waters
This family has sailed the Mediterranean. Anchored in its harbours. Walked its terrazzo. Stood on teak decks watching its particular light do what it does to everything it touches. When we put the Mediterranean in a bar we meant the actual place — the bergamot from Calabria, the morning light on the water, the smell of citrus and salt and old stone that belongs to that coastline and nowhere else.
Blind Pirate Soap Co. was founded by a 100-tonne Ocean Master captain and her son Dolton — completely blind since the NICU, raised for nine years aboard a sailboat named Syrena in Charleston Harbor, and the hands that Braille label every product this company produces. Dolton Brailles every label by hand. Every single one. Because if you can't read it independently, it isn't finished.
The website is screen-reader accessible. Every product is designed to be identified by touch. We built this company from the inside of real need and have never made a product we wouldn't trust on our most vulnerable family member.
He will see everything. He will just see it differently.
The wind is out there. Point yourself into it.
Small batch. Certified organic. Plastic-free. Every label Braille labeled by Dolton's hands.
The Mediterranean in July. Bergamot from Calabria. Orange groves on the hillside above the harbour.
Two layers. One perfect morning. Yours.
