Our family arrived in America the same year the Beatles did — 1963. An English mother and father who crossed the Atlantic and pointed themselves into a new world without flinching. A great-grandfather before them who crossed from India to England for love. A grandfather who taught a father about boats. A 100-tonne Ocean Master captain who ran cargo on a North Sea trawler named Komla to the Bahamian out islands — legal freight through waters that were busy with far more — and who never once crossed the line because some directions you simply don't sail. Her mother made sure she knew where they were.
And Dolton — conceived at sea during a circumnavigation attempt, born at 23 weeks, 157 days in the NICU, completely blind — who spent the first nine years of his life aboard Syrena in Charleston Harbor and who Braille's every single label this company produces by hand.
